According to Disney Food Blog, the technology is designed as an alternative to traditional smoke and fire effects, which can present hazards in a theme park environment.
The patent documents include artwork that resembles a Magic Mirror. Disney has previously announced that one of the new rides in the upcoming Villains Land will be a dark ride heavily featuring a Magic Mirror. While the application does not confirm its use in the park, Disney Food Blog reports that the technology could potentially be integrated into the new attraction or used as a feature within the land's queue area.
